The Korea Women’s Basketball League (WKBL) announced on Aug. 23 that the 2024 Woori Bank Park Shinja Cup, a women’s basketball tournament featuring 10 teams from three countries – South Korea, Japan and Taiwan – will be held from Aug. 31 to Sept. 8 at Asan Sunshin Gymnasium in Asan, Chungcheongnam-do.
The Park Shin-ja Cup, named after Mrs. Park Shin-ja, a legend of Korean women’s basketball, was founded in 2015 as a tournament to discover promising talents and has grown into an international competition since last year.
This year, 10 teams from three countries, including six WKBL clubs, Japan, and Taiwan, are participating.
From Japan, last year’s Park Shinja Cup winners Toyota Antelopes, the 2023-2024 Japan W-League champions Fujitsu Red Wave, and W-League team Hitachi Hi-Tech will be challenging for the title.
Taiwan’s Kesey Life returns to Korea after a two-year absence.
The five teams will be divided into groups A-B, with the first and second place teams from each group playing in the semifinals and finals.
Group A includes Asan Woori Bank, Cheongju KB, Busan BNK, Hitachi High Tech, and Toyota Antelopes.
Yongin Samsung Life Insurance, Incheon Shinhan Bank, Bucheon Hana OneQ, Kesey Life, and Fujitsu Red Wave were grouped together in Group B.
The championship prize is 30 million won and the Most Valuable Player (MVP) prize is 2 million won.
It will be the first time the Park Shinja Cup has been held in Asan in eight years, since 2016.
The opening game will be played on August 31 at 2pm between Woori Bank and Hitachi High Tech.
