A third federal court ruling determined that the Seneca State must comply with its financial obligations to the state of New York in a casino revenue dispute. Screnny said the tribe must comply with the 2019 arbitration panel’s decision to award the state a quarter of tribal slot machine revenue from Empire State Casino.
Mr Screnny said in his ruling that the Home Office’s concerns about the legality of the renewal period payment were not firmly founded. According to him, if the court does not overturn the previous decision, with the state waiting more than five years for payment, it would be insufficient grounds to conclude that the Seneca state would face extreme and unjust difficulties.
In light of the third court ruling, the tribe’s president, Matthew Pagels, issued a statement to address the situation. In his words, the state will now examine it, and the state will carefully consider and evaluate all possible options. He also added that the tribe’s top priority is to protect the agreements, the long-term viability and intensity of game property, and the thousands of jobs they provide.
Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown and Niagara Falls Mayor Robert M. Restino have been waiting for the country’s revenue for quite some time so far. Mr Brown said the decision was upheld several times in federal court. According to Mr. Brown, it’s time to get over this and give millions of dollars in revenue to the state.
Referring to Mayor Restino, his administration also said that while it considers the Seneca Nation a partner, it is time to pay for the game and focus on negotiating for a new compact as the current compact ends in 2023. In his words, the matter must be closed and everyone must get out of it.
Most recently, Seneca Nation’s Seneca Gaming Corporation also extended its partnership with Pegula Sports & Entertainment. In early December, the two companies announced they had signed a five-year extension to their current contract, meaning the tribal corporation will continue to be the official and exclusive casino partner of the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres.
In November, the game company was recognized for its gaming facilities at three Western New York casino hotels.
