FIFA has slapped North Korea with a forfeit

Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has slapped North Korea with a forfeit and a fine of about 15 million won ($15 million) for effectively boycotting a home match in Pyongyang.

FIFA announced on Wednesday that it has imposed a 10,000 Swiss francs (about $15 million) fine on the North Korean Football Association for refusing to play a home match against Japan in the fourth Group B match of the 2026 North American Football Confederation’s second Asian qualifying tournament.

North Korea was scheduled to host Japan in Pyongyang on June 26 for the fourth match of the World Cup Asia 2018 second qualifying round. The third leg was played five days earlier in Tokyo, Japan. Japan won 1-0.
